Anaerobic respiration is the process of obtaining energy in the cytosol of a cell without the participation of atmospheric oxygen molecules. This is a reserve mechanism of respiration, which is activated when there is a lack of energy production in an aerobic way - the "second wind".

Endogenous respiration is the process of obtaining energy in the cell in a predominantly anaerobic way while maintaining a minimum proportion of aerobic respiration. This type of breathing occurs in the body as a result of breathing exercises, the "third breath".

Aerobic respiration.

Under normal conditions, an aerobic type of respiration predominates in humans, in other words, the process of oxidative phosphorylation. Complete oxidation of glucose to carbon dioxide leads to the formation of 32 ATP molecules, which, from the point of view of evolution, is a progress, since aerobic respiration leads to an increase in energy supply, activity and growth of animal organisms, in particular humans.

The vast majority of ATP molecules are formed in mitochondria (these are energy-converting microscopic bodies surrounded by membranes, capable of self-reproduction, floating in the cytosol (the liquid internal environment of the cell) and usually called the energy stations of the cell). But the maximum activity of mitochondrial respiration systems has a dangerous side effect. It is known that about 98% of the atmospheric oxygen consumed by mitochondria during respiration turns into water, while the remaining 2% produce superoxide mainly due to side chemical reactions occurring at the beginning and middle of the chain of mitochondrial respiratory enzymes. Superoxide then turns into hydrogen peroxide (HO2) and hydroxyl radical (OHJ) - the strongest oxidizing agent that destroys any substance of a living cell. One of the currently most popular hypotheses of body aging explains this process by the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as OHJ. The deterioration of the conditions of existence (environmental conditions, physical overload, for example) activates the activity of the body, trying to resist the more aggressive environment that has become. Energy consumption increases, and, therefore, the main energy-supplying process, respiration, is stimulated. The activation of respiration increases the production of ROS, and elevated level ROS accelerates aging and reduces life expectancy. Thus, a person pays for the acquired ability for increased activity with his health and a reduction in life expectancy.

There is another way of breathing - anaerobic. In the absence or lack of oxygen, the process of aerobic respiration is replaced by anaerobic, this process can be clearly seen on the example of intense physical activity. Due to the fact that the content of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the muscle is rather limited (3.5-7.5 mmol / kg), after a very short time of extremely intense work (1-3 seconds), its muscle reserves run out. Of course, there is a whole system of different, simultaneously occurring processes that control recovery (ATP). But for these biochemical processes, energy is required. It is obtained by splitting other energy carriers. In what form and with the help of what energy carriers ATP recovery will be carried out depends on the energy required per unit of time. With a sudden, carried out from a state of rest, very intense muscle work, ATP is restored with the help of creatine phosphate (CF is the second most important energy carrier after ATP). During glycolysis, glucose molecules are not completely broken down, but only to lactic acid, while forming 2 ATP molecules, however, unlike the process of oxidative phosphorylation, this process does not require additional energy consumption.

This biochemical process reaches its maximum activity after a few seconds of intensive work. This type of breathing is called "second wind". The same mechanism is involved in the process of providing energy to the body in the most initial stages performance of work, when the delivery of oxygen to cells due to aerobic respiration systems is still insufficient. Due to the same mechanism, cells are provided with energy during sudden loads. For a series of intense exercises lasting 10-30 seconds. energy is obtained to a greater extent due to the reactions of glycolysis. Each of us noticed some "sluggishness" at the beginning of work or training, some "state inertia" with sudden increases in mechanical stress. This is due to the fact that it takes a certain time for the deployment of the aerobic respiration system, and all this time of the transitional period, energy supply occurs due to the anaerobic mechanism. In the anaerobic type of respiration, the cell uses oxygen-containing organic substances - lipids, proteins, carbohydrates - to obtain energy, this process takes place without the participation of atmospheric molecular oxygen. This mechanism is the most economical and most protective of the cell from damaging products of atmospheric oxygen processing. But in an untrained person, a relatively high proportion of anaerobic processes leads to a high content of lactate (lactic acid) in the blood (15-25 mmol / l), which greatly contributes to the peroxidation of the body, which hinders muscle activity. Increasing acidification of the body makes it more and more difficult to further breakdown of glycogen and, as a result, prevents the resynthesis of ATP. With a prolonged lack of oxygen, the release of energy and the synthesis of ATP associated with it will stop, and the cell will die due to a lack of energy necessary to maintain life processes. Therefore, this type of breathing can be used by the human body for a relatively short time.

But, we must not forget that the formation of lactic acid is preceded by the formation of pyruvate (pyruvic acid), which can be used by the cell to generate energy with the participation of molecular oxygen in the so-called Krebs cycle in mitochondria. Pyruvic acid turns into lactic acid only with a lack of molecular oxygen. Thus, by regulating the amount of molecular oxygen entering the body, it is possible to create conditions under which energy production in the cell occurs as efficiently as possible, protecting cells from an excess of lactic acid. Summarizing the above, we can draw the following conclusions.

Firstly, with a decrease in the proportion of the aerobic mechanism of respiration in the body, the percentage of formation of reactive oxygen species, which are aggressive towards the cell itself, decreases.
