I like the picture "First Snow" very much. Actually, I don't really like winter. But New Year saves everything.
This painting is in such gray and white colors. A lot of gray and black should emphasize the whiteness of the first snow, I guess. It’s just that then (this picture is about an old village) there were very few bright plastic objects, everything is so wooden - “natural”.
Here is a village poor house. There is a flimsy fence, thin trees. There is only one big birch, as in a poem, under the window. We also see a porch on the edge, on which there are two children. They ran out to rejoice, as they saw snow through the window. The older girl put on her mother's scarf - this one is also yellowish, the boy is calmer. He put on a hat with earflaps and some kind of sheepskin coat. Both are sleepy but happy. I would never have jumped to run to this snow to look.
Grey sky. It can be seen that it is cold, dank. And it’s also clear that soon this white snow will melt, there will be mud, which will soon freeze. The first impression of the picture is very pleasant. She wants to be looked at.
Thanks to this beautiful painting, I learned about a talented artist, a recognized classic during his lifetime in the Soviet era, Arkady Alexandrovich. The most interesting thing is that Plastov comes from a village, which is why he always tried to convey his love for the countryside through paintings. He lived in a large family, went to a village school ... As adults, he created a lot famous paintings- about the life of the peasants, but also about a new life in the countryside, about collective farms. He also died in his native village. This picture was written immediately after a long - the second World War. It was a difficult, hungry time, in which it was impossible to forget about a miracle. And how strange - even with all this pale gray, the picture looks positive. The light comes from the snow and the delighted face of the girl. They have a long, long winter ahead of them, with frosts, but they joyfully welcome it. White covered the boring dirt - everything is clean and joyful. Surely, they are thinking about good things - about the Christmas holidays, about a warm oven with pies ... And how happy they will be for spring!
By the way, the arrival of any other season is not so noticeable. In one night, all the leaves will not turn yellow, all the buds on the trees will not bloom, but the first snowfall, for real, draws a line between autumn and winter.

Snow is a fragment of the Russian folklore picture of the world and an object of aesthetic development during the XVIII - early XXI centuries. In describing the time of its appearance, Russian poets of the 20th century, contemporaries of Arkady Plastov, preferred the first snow: “The first snow is about to fall” (David Samoylov); “And if early snow fell” ( Pavel Vasiliev). By the beginning of work on the canvas, the artist came to success and high awards. In 1945, Arkady Plastov was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR, in 1946 he was awarded the Stalin Prize of the 1st degree for the paintings "Harvest" and "Haymaking" (both of them were purchased for the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery).
The theme of childhood is one of the leading ones in the artist's work. In the paintings of Arkady Plastov, children are active participants in the events: they are “active, alive, cheerful”, each has a unique individuality. He himself wrote:

The painting depicts the porch of a village house, a white, “with a bare silvery crown of a birch in the front garden”, a deserted village street “in the whiteness of falling snow flakes”. The children went out on the porch to look at the first snow. The artist depicts a "tender and open girl" and an important boy "who behaves like a little man." The children put on felt boots, which were taken from the elders, the shawl on the girl's head is clearly someone else's. The writer Vasily Dedyukhin, in his book “Paints of the Rest”, dedicated to the artist, describing the plot of the painting “First Snow”, focused on the momentary nature of the event that the artist captured: “A girl of eight or nine years old ran out with her little brother to the porch. He is dressed in winter ... And she jumped out for a minute, stuck her bare feet into oversized felt boots, threw a white scarf over her head, which she supports with both hands. And she lifted her muzzle up and looks spellbound, admiring the snowflakes that, go ahead, fell all night and are now falling ... Happy minutes are given to every person, they are sometimes short, fleeting. By capturing them on the canvas, the artist performs a holy deed. Galina Leontieva also notes that the girl threw only a scarf over the “light cotton dress”, and the boy, just in case, dressed in a completely winter way: in a coat, felt boots and earflaps.
Art history and viewers about the painting
V. I. Kostin notes the lyricism of the images and the emotional expressiveness of the coloring of the picture. In his opinion, the artist wanted to convey in his canvas an unforgettable feeling of freshness and novelty on the day of the first snowfall after the gray and dirty days of autumn, when the ground is covered with pure snow and silence sets in. The girl’s look on her face thrown back towards the falling snow is “full of quiet joy and naive surprise”, in it the viewer, according to the art critic, can easily read the experiences that he experienced in his childhood, waiting for winter, and with it - sleigh rides, ice skating, festive Christmas tree and cozy evenings in heated huts.
Art critic MS Sitnina called the picture one of the charming, subtle and lyrical works of Arkady Plastov. She believed that the artist managed to convey the freshness of a winter day and that silence when snowflakes fall softly and easily. From her point of view, only an artist who constantly lives in nature could do this. The children in the picture are adorable, lively and observant. The artist captured their hidden joy and naive surprise.
Art critic Galina Leontyeva found the motives of Sergei Yesenin's work in the painting "First Snow". In her opinion, the canvas correlates with the lines of the poet:
Galina Leontyeva notes “a bright feeling of peace and the coming rest of nature”, which gives rise to “excitement and joy” in the soul. These feelings are intensified, as they come to the viewer through the purity and immediacy of the child's soul. The joy and excitement of the children depicted in the picture are not clouded by the sadness of life experience, the adult feeling of the repeated repetition of the same events ... For them, "everything is new, for them the first day of winter is full of generous promises, vague forebodings of great joys." Leontieva believed that thanks to the picture, "we seem to be moving into a fabulous, magically beautiful, full of miracles kingdom - childhood." Without the depiction of children in the picture, it would not only not reflect the author's intention, but also its inherent poetry. The art critic compared “First Snow”, which depicts the first day of the arrival of winter, and another picture of the artist - “Spring” (another name for it is “Old Village”), which depicts the day of the inevitable departure of winter. On the first canvas, the first snow falls from the sky, on the second, large flakes fall to the ground last snow.
According to Yevgeny Rezepov, the charm of the painting "First Snow", in addition to Plastov's outstanding skill, lies in the artist's subtle and deep understanding of Russian nature and the Russian soul.
From the point of view of the art critic Inga Filippova, "First Snow" is one of Plastov's most poetic works, where "a very thin unifying line was found in the synthesis of landscape and genre paintings." Thanks to this delicate balance of the two genres, the artist achieved their absolute subordination to each other. household genre and the landscape are in close connection with the general concept of the picture, which is the semantic center of the canvas. At the same time, she believes that the landscape is interesting to Plastov "insofar as it is consonant with the child's enthusiastic state." The painting "First Snow" is typical of Plastov's first post-war works. Peace and “a special, bewitching silence” manifested in it. The artist, according to Filippova, enjoys the opportunity to listen "to nature, frozen in anticipation of magic, or to what latently matures in one's own soul and is so in tune with what is happening around." The first snow is perceived by the artist himself as a miracle. Witnesses of this miracle are children with open souls, sincere feelings, pure and innocent aspirations .
Filippova noted that the color scheme of the picture is unusual for Plastov in its conciseness:
“It is built on a juxtaposition of dark and light spots within blue-gray, white and black, combined with ocher. The plasticity of the line acquires an important role here - the characteristic bends of birch branches, the emphasized severity of the pattern of the log house wall, the lopsided picket fence near the porch. The picturesque expressiveness of the canvas is convincing in a Plastian way. The artist managed to convey the feeling of air humidity, looseness of warm snow, densely lying on wet ground. The figures of children standing on the porch are the emotional center of the picture, the focus of the author's comprehension of the child's soul.
Art critic M. V. Udaltsova notes the “Levitan mood” in the picture, “the achromatic range of colors, silence, serenity and harmony that reign in the world.”
Painting in Pedagogy and Teaching Methods
The canvas of Arkady Plastov was repeatedly recommended by Soviet and modern Russian teachers and methodologists for use in lessons in a secondary school. In particular, Tatyana Gubernskaya considered it possible to use the painting to work on an essay in grade 4. Natalya Bezdenezhnykh offers an essay on this picture in grade 3.
